My grandson wants me to install Limewire on my daughters home computer. Is
this safe for the computer (spyware, etc.) and is it legal (file swapping)?

Thanks!

The software is OK, but it dumps about 7 files in your registry (Bearshare)
which I clean out after use.

Its safe but I suspect the stuff he's wanting to do with it will be far
from legal.

Safe, yes. But as with all such utils, be sure you download ONLY from
either the homepage or a reputable mirror site. There's also a $
version, PRO, which I like a lot, but for basics I think the freeware
vers is very good. Too, be sure your anti-virus software and
adware-spyware utils are current and running, and ALWAYS run them
against whatever you download. Even then, be very careful what you get!

As far as "legal," no reputable p2p software will tell you that
whatever you download is legal. That depends on the license for
whatever you download, not on it's availability via LimeWire or
whatever p2p. "Buyer" beware. It's up to you to be sure you're not
stealing software, music, etc. Other national/local laws may put
additional restrictions on what is legal to "swap."

Thanks to all who responded. I'll have to think about it. It looks like some
problems are lurking.

If your grandson is under the age of 25 :)I would recommend against any p2p
file sharing program. There is no way for you to monitor what he will
download. It is illegal and risky as far as security goes. If he gets caught
downloading or uploading copyrighted material you will be liable for
thousands of dollars.
At the least he will corrupt and infect your computer by downloading with
this program.

Just say NO:)

I am advancing my knowledge and education from downloading information from
p2p networks using them as a vast internet library, faster that it would
ever be possible using conventional ways. (I use mostly eMule which I also
recommend more than limewire).

So its all about what you CHOOSE to do with a given technology, and how you
use it.

So its not at all about the computer program, but how your child is
programmed.

I use eMule and I have never got a virus from the terabytes of information I
have downloaded. All I use is avast home free antivirus that scans the p2p
networks. www.avast.com

Your information is incomplete, and misleading.

Would you tell little Thomas Edison (as a child) to not play with
electricity because it was too dangerous?

its all about ethics... if you have something to complain about, complain
about the upbringing of children, and their ability to choose, and not about
the available technology!
