I am installing TS and will be using all Win 2k
professional clients. DO I need to install the licensing
server? This is a franchise location connecting to a dc
at corporate HQs. Corporate will not allow a TS licensing
server on the dc. Since Win 2k pro is supposed to get a
free license from the TS, do I need the licensing server?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, you must install and activate a TS Licensing server, since
the W2K Pro and XP Pro clients get their free TS CALs from the LS.

It also must be installed on a Domain Controller.

Q. Our division wants to install a Windows 2000 terminal server,
but our servers belong to a Windows 2000 domain that we are not
administrators of. How can we setup a license server if it needs
to be running on a domain controller?

A. Using the instructions in the Microsoft knowledge base (KB)
article Q239107 it is possible to direct a Windows 2000 terminal
server to use a specific license server outside of the domain.

Thank you Vera.

The problem with this solution is that there is only the
one DC which we have no access to. We do not have our own
DC.

I see. Can you set up your own DC? Maybe even in a separate child
domain? I think that you'll need to talk to management at HQ about
their policy. I can understand that they don't want the hassle of
dealing with potential TS Client License problems, but if you are
allowed to run your own DC, that would be your task ;-)

The only other workaround is to install your W2K Terminal Server
*not* as a member server of the W2K domain, but in a NT 4.0 domain
or in a separate workgroup. When a W2K TS runs in a workgroup, you
can install the Licensing service on the TS itself.
You might experience problems with user profiles, home directories
and so on, though.
