Licensing issue or nonsense from a MS dealer

Hi there,
We are thinking of upgrading a few of our PCs from Windows 98 to
Windows xp home here at the office. As far as I know there is no
restriction on that matter. I mean, it is possible to just remove
windows 98 and install Windows XP without problems. But when my boss
asked around about the price of the license for windows xp home, he got
an answer that I think is not right. They told him that it was illegal
to buy licenses for Windows XP Home for office usage. I don't remember
anything like that on the EULA, so I think is all crap. Still, better
check out with some of you. Any comments?

There is nothing preventing anyone from selling Windows XP Home for an
office environment. The sales force is just mixed up. It is a fact that the
Professional version is geared for the office/enterprise environment. It is
also true that if you need to connect to a domain you NEED Windows XP
Professional. But for many small businesses that are just using a work group
environment, XP Home should be fine.

Now, my personal opinion. Go for XP Professional. You may find out down the
road that you DO need some of the extra benefits that Professional affords.

How many computers are involved?

It might be worthwhile looking into a Volume License rather than
separate retail licenses.
