I am more use to SBS2003 which comes with 5 Cals so I am a little confused
about this. I have a Server 2003 server and when I logged on it says "Your
tereminal services temporary licenses will expire in 14 days...." The client
has 4 users.
A few questions -
1. I assume Terminal Services are used for Remote Desktop access and
Windows applications. Is that correct?
2. At $749, would I be better off upgrading to SBS2003?
Any advice would really be appreciated.

1. If the 2003 Server came with 5 licenses, they are normal Server
CALs. To connect to this server with the TS client (= Remote
Desktop client), you also need a Terminal Services CAL. That's what
the server is warning about.
What you have to do is to install a TS Licensing Server, either on
the 2003 Server itself, or on the SBS2003 Server. Then you must buy
and install TS CALs on it, one for each user or client who connects
to the TS.

2. No, not if you need terminal Services. You cannot run terminal
Services (which implies Application Server mode - multiple user
connections) on an SBS2003 server. Documented in the SBS FAQ at

Thank you so much for your help - please forgive my ignorance, but is there a
place I can go to see how to install TS Licensing Server? Can I buy TS
Licenses in less than 5 packs?

Installing TS Licensing Server is really easy: Start - Control
Panel - Add/Remove programs - Add/Remove windows components. Just
select TS Licensing Service.
I don't think that you can buy less then 5 TS CALs, but I'm not
sure. Check with your local vendor.
And make sure that you choose the type of TS CALs which is right
for you, either per User or Per Device. You can't switch later on,
if you don't buy Software Assurance also.
