Sorry if this is a repeat. I am getting a new lap top and want to transfer my
XP Pro from my old PC to the new lap top. How do I transfer the license.
Thanks.

Did your copy of XP Pro come bundled with the old laptop? If so, you can't
use it - it's an OEM copy and can be used only on that hardware. If it's a
retail copy, or a volume license copy, install away.

Why not order the laptop with the OS that you want? Wouldn't that be
much simpler?

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on and install it
onto the new computer. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you might
have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Of course, any OEM OS that comes with the laptop *cannot* be
transferred to any other computer, under any circumstances.

Thanks Bruce. I did end up getting a laptop with XP Pro. I was trying to save
a few bucks by getting one with Home and installing my licensed retail copy
of Pro on it.
