Hi,

I have an old eurobook-notebook which comes with Windows XP Home and
the license-sticker.
Because I've crashed the notebook I can use it anymore. :-(

Is it legally to use this license if I can get a copy of Windows XP
Home from a friend?
I don't have further documents except the sticker (as mentioned before
- it's an old notebook).

kind regards

Markus

No. The OEM Windows XP license that came with your
old notebook is non-transferable to a different computer.
When the old notebook died, so did the OEM Windows XP
license that came with it.

Sorry "Kemco", but your advice is absolutely wrong.
An OEM version cannot be transferred or activated
on a different computer. An OEM license is forever
tied to the first computer it was installed on.

You're reading the question wrong. OP wants to use his friend's disk
to install the OS, but use the license key from the his original
installation. Original OEM key on his machine.

...and he wants to do it on *another* machine.

Markus, now that all the back and forth is over by the other posters and you
have clarified you want to install XP on another machine using the license
key issued to your now defunct notebook, if it's an OEM license that came
installed on the computer when purchased, the end user license agreement,
EULA, states it's tied to that computer and can't be transferred to another
system. The only way to transfer that license it is to sell it with the
original computer. Since the compute has died so has the license for the
software.

By your own admission, you are dealing with OEM licenses for
WinXP. An OEM version must be sold with a piece of hardware (normally
a motherboard or hard rive, if not an entire PC) and is _permanently_
bound to the first PC on which it's installed. An OEM license, once
installed, is not legally transferable to another computer under _any_
circumstances.

An OEM License must be sold with a new computer only now days. No more
selling with one piece of hardware. It has to be sold with a computer.

False in the USA and Spain. I just purchased a generic OEM XP Pro from
NewEgg in the USA and the only requirement to get it was a credit card
number. I can show you three computer chain store web sites in Spain
that have no hardware or complete computer requirement and never have.

As you are in Tennessee, and claim to be a tech, you should know better
and stop spreading false information.

No, that's no at all true. OEM licenses are readily available from
multiple sources, without having to purchase an entire computer.

Not true, as far as I know. If you know otherwise, please document it with a
citation for the rest of us.

OEM copies of Windows are *widely* available without a new computer, as a
quick Google search will show.
