license compatibility from XP to 2000

I currently have 20 PC's running windows XP Pro (purchased OEM license with
the 20 Computers from Dell) For an up coming event my customer requested that
we load windows 2000 on the machines. If i currently have XP pro running on
the machines will I have to purchase a brand new license to load windows 2000
on them? Is it possible for me to just purchase the windows 2000 media and
load on all 20 machines since XP is backwards compatible with 2000.

You'll need to purchase twenty (20) licenses for
Windows 2000 and perform a "clean install" of
Windows 2000. The Windows XP Pro licenses
are only valid with the Dell Reinstallation CD
for Windows XP.

OEM and the Select/Open Volume licenses can be downgraded. Further the
WinXP license remains a _single_ license: you can use it for its
original WinXP installation, or you can use it, if it meets the other
requirements, Win2K Pro.

You would have to use a Win2K CD and Product Key that you already
have a legal license to use.
