Lexmark X83

Hello and thanks for your time in reading this. Back in
March I lost partial use of my X83. It will no longer
print from the on screen control panel. It will scan to
file, but not print. Going to Word Pad, or command prompt
doesn't work eithet. I have been through extensive tests
with the Lexmark people and they had concluded that it
was a windows problem. I went to Microsoft's e mail
support, but my free time was up before the problem was
resolved. I just put the printer on the side and gave up
hope. The people on these boards tried very hard, but no
one to date has figured out the problem.
Very recently I have been contacted by two different
people who through on line searches, found my previous
posts here. They have the exact same problems and in a
similar time frame. I am suspecting that a windows update
has affected us. I saw this happen once to a web cam. A
simple uninstall and reinstall was all that was needed
there though. Have any of you experienced a similar
problem? Better question, has anyone who has found
someone get their problem resolved? We collectively seem
to have used up our resources outside of having a
professional come to the house. Any feedback would be
greatly appreciated.
With Great Thanks,
George B.

Have you tried a COMPLETE uninstall and reinstall of the printer..... since
it's a Lexmark, follow Bruce Sanderson's instructions on how to completely
remove a Lexmark...

http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm
to remove all traces of the printer. Pay specific attention to Bruce's
special section on Lexmark printers.

Then download a new copy of the software from the Lexmark website at
www.lexmark.com

Install the software and ONLY connect the printer when the software tells
you to do so.

George,

My parents recently had a similar problem with their X83.
When they tried to print something they got a "Problem
Communicating With the Printer" message, and no printout.
The printer worked fine until about a month ago. I found
something in the Microsoft Knowledge Base that seemed to
fix the problem. Windows XP had turned off power to the
USB Root Hub device to save power, and once I disabled
this Windows function, the printer worked fine. Here's
the info from the knowledge base:

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 822968

"Problem Communicating With Printer" Message Appears When
You Try to Print to a Lexmark X Series Multifunction
Printer

SYMPTOMS
When you try to print to a Lexmark X series Multifunction
printer, you may receive the following message over the
printer icon in the notification area at the far right of
the taskbar:

Problem communicating with the printer

This behavior may occur even after you install the latest
drivers for your Lexmark X series printer.

CAUSE
This issue may occur if Windows turns off the power to the
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Root Hub device to save power.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click
Properties.

Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click USB
Root Hub, and then click Properties.

Note There may be more than one USB Root Hub installed in
your computer. In this case, you may have to follow these
steps with each USB Root Hub device.

Click the Power Management tab, click to clear the Allow
the computer to turn off this device to save power check
box, and then click OK.

Quit Device Manager.
