Received wisdom seems to be to avoid any Lexmark printer like the plague and to avoid any HP printer unless you don't mind paying for a CD when new drivers are released, as they aren't available for download.

Jon.

Not what I have seen in this group.
Lexmark Lasers have been well regarded.

Fairynuff. I hadn't received that qualification.

and I'm somewhat curious regarding your comment about having to order
drivers from Lexmark. I have not noticed this, and in fact they are
among the few companies that tends to release source code for some of
their printer drivers. Don't get me wrong, i'd run away from their
inkjets... but they have done a few things right in the laser
department.

I didn't. I said HP.

Ah, I totally misread that... I am still curious as to why you say that
in reference to HP. I "have" experenced this with HP, but I have only
experenced this with their multi-fuctionals, and heard about this in
reference to their scanners.

The HP LaserJet 1020 has below-average print quality in my opinion. There's
a lot of toner splash and characters have that fuzzy halo effect. Also, it
lacks PCL or PS emulation so many PDF files just won't print correctly.
However the engine fuses toner correctly (even to rougher paper) and doesn't
smudge fine lines like the HP LaserJet 1320.

I haven't used the Lexmark E238, but I have used the E240n. I think they're
very similar, certainly in the engine department. Characters are relatively
crisp, but dark and heavy, although this can be adjusted to acceptable
levels by lowering the toner density. No toner splash or fuzziness. I
would say it's comparable to the 1320, but nowhere near the 4200/4300 series
or Samsung ML-2250.

Thank you for the on-topic reply:))

There were some good reviews on epinions and Staples had a $50 rebate, bringing
the price down to $99.95 so I bought it. So far so good. Its quick and printing
looks good. It has both USB and parallel ports which I like cause I use the
latter.
