Level 1 blocked attachments - change?

Judi Tousley

There is an EXE attachment that is not virus ridden (one that I opened in
previous versions of Outlook and OE and Windows) that will not open now that
I have Outlook 6 and WinXP. When I click on the email, the following message
appears: "Outlook blocked access to the following potentially unsafe
attachment."

How do I change the Level 1 item (EXE) to a Level 2 item (so I can save the
attachment to a folder, manually scan the folder and then open this old
attachment)?

I have administrator privileges. This is a home computer.

Roady, thanks for your response. I am using Outlook 2002...sorry if I did
not make that clear. In my two previous versions of Outlook (and in previous
versions of OE...I have used both) I didn't have any trouble opening
"potentially unsafe" attachments.

In OE, the box IS unchecked for "Do not allow attachments..." but I don't
think that will help me in Outlook and I cannot find anything within the
Outlook settings to move a "level 1" file extension to the "level 2" list
so that I can manually scan a particular attachment. For instance, someone
sent me an Access file the other day and Outlook blocked it and would not
let me get to it. There are EXE files that are virus free that I cannot get.

Any ideas?

http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/esecup/getexe.htm has several methods
listed that you can use to get attachments off of your messages. Attachment
Options from www.slovaktech.com is the easiest for most people.

For more information on Outlook's security features, see
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/esecup.htm

For OE, hit Forward on the message and save the attachment or disable it
completely in Tools, Options, Security.

FWIW, never versions of Outlook (not OE) save unblocked attachments to the
drive when the message is opened or previewed or before opening the
attachments - so as long as you use autoprotect, the attachment is scanned
before opening.
