Legal Issues

I've tried and tried and tried to reinstall Win XP on my moms computer using the "Dell Recovery CD". Everytime it boots it comes up with various DLL errors and if I right click on the desktop it get the windows error blurp from explorer. I've formatted the Hard drive on my computer several times Xp upgrade over 98, I've never had a problem , it works fine everytime. The Tech support people at Dell were of no help to me as they were simply reading me through the procedure I have done several times on my own. My questions are these; is it legal for me to use my copy of xp on my moms computer? If it isn't why not?( I mean she technically has a serial number for a copy from Dell stuck to the side of her tower) and Can I use my copy of XP with her serial number or do the #'s have to match? Either way I'm not frustrated with XP its more with the bullsh!t "RECOVERY CD" provided by Dell and the fact that they have been no real help to me

Thanks in advance

Bradzilla;
You can try, the worst case is the number on her computer will not
work.
Is her computer out of warranty?

The Dell "Recovery CD" and its Product Key will only work
on the specific Dell computer it shipped with. It will not install,
nor is it legal, to attempt to install it on a different computer.

You cannot use your Windows XP CD with any other Product Key
other than the one it came with. A Dell Product Key will only work
with the Dell CD.

This "Recovery CD" will not work with the computer it was shipped with though. I'm not Bill Gates but it shouldn't be this hard to put a fresh copy of Windows on a Basic computer. Can I put my copy of XP on her Dell? or do I require another licence? Can't afford 150 Bucks for another copy

Yeah but it was a good deal for my mom who just uses it as a typewriter and my sister who chats online
FYI Norton anti-virus reinstalled makes it crap out twice as fast. Go figure

Hello
I am not sure this will work, you can try to boot from your XP cd and delete
all existing partitions then remove your cd and put the recovery cd in and
see if it will work at that point. What happens when you try to recover.
If the computer is still running you can try to extract the key code to see
if it is the same that is on the license.

You need to work with Dell support to resolve your issue. You should
try disconnecting all peripheral hardware devices, except the monitor,
keyboard and mouse. If you made any internal hardware changes, you
must reverse any upgrades and return the PC to its original factory
hardware configuration.
No, you cannot install your copy of Windows XP on the computer
unless you purchase another license.

Your moms computer came with a license to use the OEM copy of Windows XP as
supplied by Dell.
This license is a lot cheaper then the license you bought for your PC.
You say you have done upgrades on your PC so this implies you have a Windows
XP Upgrade.

You cannot use your copy of Windows XP on her machines for the following
reasons.

The Product Activation Key supplied with her PC will only work with her
recovery CD not your upgrade.

Your upgrade would require that her PC has a qualifying product to upgrade
from and that license is lost as it become part of the license to use
Windows XP. So you could not use your Win98 CD and then upgrade as your
license to use Win98 is now gone and is part of your Windows XP license.

You have 2 different products that cost different amounts and have different
licensing - so you would not just be replacing her Windows XP with another
one.

You have 2 options - work this out with Dell or buy a new copy of Windows XP
for her machine.

That you for clearing up the license problem I was having, It's not like I was trying to screw Microsoft, I've never had a major problem with their software. This still doesn't solve the installation problem I'm having with the "Recovery CD". Not really a Microsoft problem but a Dell problem, however, does the cheaper licensing fee paid by Dell result in a cheaper Microsoft product being shipped? I can't honestly see Micosoft shipping sub-par versions of their software so I'm assuming Dell is making these "Recovery CD's" with the license from Microsoft. I realise that cash is king and that Dell would be throwing alot of it Microsofts way but on the other hand I can't see Microsoft standing idly by while Dell ships sub-par software with Microsofts name on it. Again, my real beef is with Dell but it is Microsoft software, through Dell, that I am having the problem with

Thanks again and any opinions or answers on the above are greatly appreciated

No internal changes have been made its completely factory. I Thought the modem was a problem as it was connecting to the internet though not through my provider as I hadn't installed the software yet or set up the connection. It still crashes whether the modem is hooked up or not. And printers etc.... Where can I get another license for my copy??? Do you know how much???? Either way I'm going to try Haus' idea it might be tricky enouh to work

Thanks again for the assistance in this matter

Hey

Yes Ive already checked the key code and it's correct. The "Recovery CD" will not let me format C unless I first put in the Dell Driver and Applications cd ...which boots up dos and then through the help of the lovely east indian man on the phone from Dell walks me through about 20 lines of gibberish (to me anyways and probably to him as he was clearly just reading from a computer). Then and only then can I format C. I tried the recovery at first just to repair windows and it didn't work just kept freezing at welcome screen. So after reformatting C I tried to install the fresh copy of XP as per the man from Dell, with him on the phone all the while, well over an hour. Everything semed to be ok at first glance however after I hung up the phone I decided to put some order to the software my mom wanted on her computer. So I tried to right click on the desktop to create a folder and it came up with an explorer error and windows must close yadda yadda yada, you know the screen. The only thing on the hard drive is windows at this point. Also after installing the driver for the NIC card the computer can connect to the internet through the Highspeed modem even before I install the sofware or set up the connection. None of this makes any sense to me. Thats pretty much the whole story. It happens everytime I try to reinstall, however I have only formatted C once because of the whole going into DOS and unlocking something. Dammit I knew I should have written that stuff down.

Anyways I like the way you think, At least my Xp cd will allow me to format C (I Hope) at which point I can insert the damned "Recovery CD" to avoid any licensing issues. Either way I'll keep you informed of what happened I'm heading over there again right now . Any thoughts on the modem issue though and the mystery connection, a Dell bug i figure

Thanks for your continued assistance

Brad,

The opertaing system supplied to Dell is the same as the retail product.
Dell then take the OS and add any machine specific components and branding
and may make other configuration changes to suite there platforms.
So you eventually get a Dell OEM version of our base OS.

The issue appears to be one related to the recovery CD.
Is it possible it is damaged and thus leading to corrupt DLLs being placed
on the hard disk ?
If so ask Dell for a replacement - you may be expected to pay a nominal
charge for this.
Dell are a reputable OEM and it would be extremely are to think they have a
problem with something as the factory restore CDs given the sheer volume of
machines they ship every week.

Just Got off the phone with the Dell Rep and he said to call tech support yet again and try yet another walkthrough he also added that its very possible the Sasser Worm is on that computer. Is he feeding me a line or is that still possible even after formatting the one and only hard drive?? I ran FxSasser from the symantec site and it said the comp was clean, He wants me to try Stinger from Mcaffee. I dont know much about viruses and worms but shouldn't a full format get rid of the problem... The Sasser worm was one of the original fears and thus the formatting and reinstallation of windows

Thanks in advance for your time

Using the Dell Reinstallation CD and Dell Product Key, follow this procedure:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

===> Accessing Motherboard BIOS
===> http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.
==> http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:

Anyways thanks for taking the time to help me out on this

Also the Sasser worm wasn't found on the computer so thaat Dell guy was on crack I scanned in normal boot and safe mode, followed all the instructions for manual removal from symantec and 2 different removal tools ... nothing
