Hi,

The only way to change the product key (unless you have a volume license,
which I doubt) is to do a repair installation with the legal key.

That would depend on the OS you currently have installed, and the OS
you have a valid key for. IF they are both the same version (Pro,
corp, home) then you can change the key. IF they are different (Pro
vs corp, or pro vs home) then you can't simply change the key.

is how to do an inplace upgrade (or reinstallation of the SAME
version) of XP

If you are trying to install a WinXP Service Pack and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid

You need to purchase and a _legitimate_ retail or OEM full license
of WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CDs and Product Keys.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

You should also report whomever sold you this license to your local
law enforcement agencies; you've been defrauded.

I'm not saying you have a counterfeit or pirate copy of XP but it is
possible. The above links will help you to figure out if you have a
legitimate copy. If you are still unsure then phone the anti-piracy hotline
from the above links.

You certainly ARE going to have to reinstall the operating system for some
reason.

Do a repair install if you have a LEGAL copy of Windows XP Professional. If
you have a LEGAL copy of Windows XP Home you will have to perform a
format/install - wipe everything off of your Windows partition.

Well, maybe--
I've had this message occur as well on valid keys. Some times repeated
repair installs and orther problems such as updates can result in the
message. A call to MS usually gets things cleared up. At least with an MSDN
subscription, you don't get much hassle about such things.
