Leftclick opens search window instead of folder....

Hello,
My wife's laptop seems to be having an issue. When we left click to open a
folder, it opens to the search window instead of the folder itself. We have
to right-click on the folder and select 'open' instead of just
double-clicking with the left mouse button. Any ideas? I've reset all
folder options and restored all defaults and it is still happening....

Since it is a laptop, does it have an integrated (built in) mousing
device? Probably... Does the left click button work the same as a
double tap on the pad - if that is how it is set up.

Could be the built in device has lost it's mind and just needs to be
reset. Those pads can be reprogrammed on purpose or by accident. At
the moment, I would not say you have a Windows software problem.

Do you have a USB mouse from another computer you can plug in
temporarily to see if that will work? You should not have to intall
any software - just plug it in and try it. You can use either the
external or built in device, both at the same time...

If the external USB mouse works and the built in one doesn't then your
built in device is a fault and there should be no software that needs
fixing. Probably not physically "broken", but the built in device
just somehow needs to be set back to the factory defaults.

Even if you don't have an external mouse to try, find out what you
have to do to restore the factory settings to the built in device from
looking at your instructions, the WWW page of the manufacturer, or
maybe tell us all the details of your laptop and somebody can help you
find instructions.

Does rebooting fix it?

Malke's post is a good idea also, but you can reregister what may be
an afflicted DLL without downloading anything:

Click Start, Run, type cmd <enter>

In the DOS window, type:

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll <enter>

Type exit to close DOS the window.

It would be good to know which one works - reboot, reregister
shell32.dll, fix inbred touchpad, external mouse, etc...

If nothing works, there are other ideas.
