Lots of people here are leaving their computers on, I do when I am
home and using it, but if you are not using it
you are contributing to global warming because the power you are
consuming (electricity) it probably created by burning fossil fuel.
Now you may say, will I alone destroy the earth? I will say no, but
what if each day thousands of more computers are produced (with they
are)
and each of these computers stay on all the time what will happen? We
will be burning tons of coal and petroleum just because we are not
careful or too lazy to
press the shut down button!

On the other hand, if frequent powering up and down causes
thermal stress which causes components to fail, the manufacture
of the replacement components you therefore have to buy also uses
power and contributes to the problems you are talking about.

I don't say this to espouse either keeping it on or turning it
off, but only to point out that the issues are not necessarily as
simple as you claim.

there is no solid proof that computers will be destroyed if you turn them on
and off. I have been turning all my computers on and off for years, with no
hardware problem.
Anyway most people change their hardware because its outdated so they are
contributing to global warming in that way PLUS leaving on their computers
all the time.
I am not claiming anything is simple, on the otherhand you are ignoring
facts just because you want to find excuses to have your computer on all the
time.
You think you have found the simple solution and that is to leave the
computer on, because you like it.

People close your computers when not in use!

Hi

Why is then that when I close two PCs down every night and leave the other three turned on, that the hardware on the two needs to be replaced more often than the other three? Your synopsis of "there is no solid proof that computers will be destroyed if you turn them on and off" - fails my testing. Can you explain that?

And my uncle smoked two packs of cigarettes a day until he was 99
and didn't get lung cancer. When you discuss what might happen,
the experience of a single person is meaningless. Only statistics
based on large numbers of cases mean anything.

As a matter of fact, I do *not* leave my computers on all the
time. I personally take a middle ground--I leave them on during
the day and turn them off at night.

As I said, I was not arguing to keep them on all the time (that's
*not* my position), merely pointing out that you're
oversimplifying the matter.

I think all concerned would best be served if you left your computer off ALL
the time.

He probably led a healthy life in other aspects like the types of food he
ate, perhaps less stress and more physical activity.
If he was eating junk food PLUS drinking and smoking I would not think he
would last that long.

WAKE UP and smell the TRUTH!

Global climate change is no hoax, it's just not fully understood. We've
only been studying it for a short time in history. I have worked with
some of the scientists at NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration) studying global climate changes and it definitely a
concern. I agree that environmental extremists have used the issue as a
soapbox to preach but the concern is a valid one nonetheless and is
being studiesd very closely. The EPA has a website dedicated to global
warming.
I suggest reading here, you just might learn something:

Not all environmentalists are "WACKO's". Your statements are completely
false. No offense Michael, but it's more "WACKO" to be expressing
limited and uniformed views and beliefs as though they are facts.

No offense Kennny but get off the soapbox. The people who are going to
leave them on will do so no matter what you say.

I have to turn mine off, sometime. The power supply fan get read
lould. An bug someelse. (Yes, I know I could get another power
supply-I went through two already both noisy more the 22 dec.)

I think it would be a fire hazard if you left the computer on, while
you are gone. I usally don't unless I'm downloadin something.

Windows XP crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.
I've seen similar sig along time ago on creative newsgroup. Are you that
person?

Hey I smoke one pack a day. I hope to see 99 with no lung cancer too.

I concur. I think the root problem is overpopulation.

Heh, probably not. Never posted there. I always try to be original in my
headers and sigs, but it can be difficult becuase of how big usenet is and
how many people have and do post on it. The Windows haikus have been around
since 1998, they are oldies but goodies. The DRM blurb is original. Any
duplication from another's sig is completely coincidental. My apologies to
them for unintentionally duplicating anything. :)
