Leaving a copy of a message on the server

Bob

I have two computers and each has a copy of Outlook 2003
and Outlook Express, giving me a total of four copies of
outlook. I have chosen to leave a copy of my email
messages on the server so that I can view them on both
computers. Can I disable or uninstall the two copies of
Outlook Express that are installed on the two computers,
so that I don't have to go through all four outlook
accounts and delete the emails from all four of them? I
don't really want to stop saving copies of the messages
on the server, in case I want to view the same email on
the other computer. Any suggestions?

You shouldn't need to do anything with Outlook Express - just don't open
it and it won't run and won't download your messages. If you need to use
it for NNTP (UseNet) try starting it with the /Newsonly switch -- you could
even create a shortcut to OE that starts it with the /NEWSONLY switch then
it won't attempt to download e-mail.

To add to Ben's response - two computers with copies of Outlook 2003 and
Outlook Express on each does NOT give you "four copies of Outlook". Outlook
& Outlook Express are two totally different programs.

No, you cannot delete Outlook Express from either computer without disabling
Outlook 2003, as Outlook depends on certain files in Outlook Express to
function properly.

There is no problem with your leaving a copy of messages on the server until
the messages are collected by both computers. The best solution is to either
delete your mail accounts from both versions of Outlook Express (that would
disable mail service in Outlook Express) or just stop checking mail using
Outlook Express on both computers and, as Ben said, just use Outlook
Express for news reading, if you like.
