lcd monitor

I have an Envision lcd monitor which is 4 1/2 years old. In the past week
it began to go black for one or two seconds. The power light stays on but
the screen goes blank. It seems like it is happening more often so I
checked all connections but still have the same problem. I ran diagnostic
tests on the video card but it looks like that isn't the problem. I also
updated the drivers for the video card. Is the monitor on its way out or
could it be a problem I am missing? I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 on a
Gateway computer which is also 4 1/2 years old (Pentium IV 2.0 processor).

There have been occasional instances where the video card
would do that, for example when Windows loads, if the driver
is changing the card's clock speed, or on some drivers there
was a glitch where previewing multimeter file properties
would cause a momentary video loss, but beyond these types
of specific event-bound occurances, yes it does suggest the
monitor itself is failing. If you're handy with a
screwdriver and multimeter you could open it up and poke
around a bit, I'd wonder if it might be the lamp near
end-of-life at this point, but have no idea what lamp it
might use, where to get one.

It could more likely be the high-voltage supply to the lamp is breaking
down. On laptop LCDs it is a replacement of the high voltage inverter
board. Desktop LCDs have a more complex high voltage supply and I don't
know if this is a possible user fix. Lamp failure is typically preceded
by a shift in color tint and dimming.

It sounds like you may have to look into having the "backlight" replaced in
your LCD monitor.
