Launching that Microsoft Word application from Internet Explorer 6

I am having trouble launching microsoft word from a link opening a word macro
as a .doc file type in Internet Explorer. It tries to open up the word file
within the browser and gives an error message saying the file cannot be found
or is unable to be located. What needs to be done to configure the files to
load up correctly and lauch the program?
