Latest XP patches stop XP working properly

The latest XP patches: 873339, 885835, 886185 and 885836 which Windows Update
insists that I need result in the Workstation service stopping after a
reboot, breaking windows update, stopping the computer browser service from
working, breaking MSI and causing other problems with services.

I can't seem to report this to MS so i'll moan about it here and hope that
someone else is having a similar problem or knows something about it. It
seems to be 886185 which causes the problem as when I uninstall that one and
reboot, the workstation service starts again and the computer begins working.

Because of all the service problems and the fact the system account seems to
disappear I think there must have been a change to the local system accounts,
but with it being XP Home I'm having trouble getting very far into the
problem.

Anyway, do they know about this? Is it just me? Does anyone have a solution?
If anyone has this problem and is reading this the remedy I used was to
uninstall the four patches above. This is unsatisfactory however as it leaves
your computer exposed to the vulnerabilities that these patches were meant to
stop.

This may just be a coincidence. Many cleaners disable these settings and
more. If you are running Pro, go to Start/Run and type in: services.msc
and enable these services. First, you will have to use the drop box and set
to Automatic, Apply, then Start, Apply.

It takes the correct order to be started before the rest will fall into
place. I have written an edit that can do this for you, but it is user
specific.

In my findings it was not patch related. If you feel this is the case for
you: Remove the latest from Add or Remove or:

Repair the Windows XP Installation - Note: You will forfeit all MS Updates.

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information
about how to do this, please refer to your computer's documentation or
contact your computer manufacturer.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run
WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your
screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen,
press ENTER: To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is
displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is
selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP. Follow
the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

I can't start the automatic updates service. It tells me that BITS and
Event Logger also need to be started (which are set to auto and are
started).
Any hints as to why the automatic updates service will not start?

I have followed your support link but I simply get a "free support is not
available" message. And there seems to be no other way to report it without
having to phone them, which I am loathe to do as it is a patch. I can't see
them being to fussed if it only seems to be me who is experiencing this
problem.

I will install them one at a time to find out the exact cause. And may post
again on this thread if anything is discovered.

Thankyou.

Hi Kelly,

My computer works fine without the patches when I install them the problems
start. When I uninstall them (i'll be finding out which one) the problem
stops. I've tried manually starting the workstation service and so on but it
always fails when the patches are installed.

Thanks

Hello,

This is what happened:

Firstly I applied 886185 (the Firewall one). Everything Fine still after
reboot. I Applied 873339 second Everything Fine still after reboot. I then
tried to apply 885835 which broke the operating system (see top post) again.
So I uninstalled it. The services etc started normally after it was
uninstalled.

885836 Applied last, after I had uninstalled 885835. Everything working fine
still after reboot.

I then Tried to apply the 885835 again, just for the sake of completeness
and it broke the operating system again.

I will also mention (in the hope that someone who works for Microsoft reads
these forums) that it gives a Windows Update Error of [Error number:
0x800A0046] when you try to connect to the Windows update website.
This took me a while to figure out after going down the Microsoft online
support route as none of the solutions hit the mark and was how I discovered
this problem.

I'm really only mentioning it so that someone who has a similar problem may
find the answer here. This patch was rated as important so While I'm loathe
to leave it I will.
