Latest Windows XP Automatic Updates (about 5/10/07)

Greetings, I have a DELL computer Dimension 8300, that after the install of
the latest Automatic Updates, has gone flukey!.
Since the latest Automatic Windows Update was run (I think 5/12/07), I
receive the following error on startup, "Windows cannot play the sound
%SystemRoot%\Media\Windows XP Error.wav. Your sound card may be in use"; yet
the sound will work. In addition, I can't connect to Windows Update via the
Microsoft web site. If I select either Express Update or Custom Update, the
result is the same; constant green bar going from left to right and nothing
else. Also, the Windows Taskbar will flash from solid blue to white.
Everything in Device manager is working properly. Thank you for your
suggestion and advice.

Find out what updates were applied and remove them through Add/Remove
programs. Then do a system restore to the restore point created right
before the updates were installed.

Start | Help and Support | System Restore.

If the system is working ok at that point, go to the windows update site, do
a custom scan, and install updates one at a time. Many times the updates
will now install properly, otherwise this will help you pinpoint which
update is causing the problem.

Additional, to get an idea of what updates were installed you would normally
go to the windows update site, do a custom scan, then click on the link in
the left pane that deals with update history. Unfortunately you're system
isn't working to get you there. As an alternative, make sure you have it
set to display hidden files, then go to C:\Windows. The uninstall folders
for windows updates will be shown in blue in the form of
$NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$. Check for folders created on the date in question.
Note the KB number, then go to Add/Remove programs and remove those updates.

Another way to get that info is to download and run the free inventory tool,
Belarc Advisor.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

It displays a variety of things about the computer hardware and installed
software including what updates were installed when.

I followed thet suggestion by Robear Dyer (PA Bear) which is described below
and everythin seems to be working now. Thank you to all for your help. _____

Is Outlook.exe spiking to near-100% CPU? If not, what is?

The following is courtesy of MVP Emeritus Ottmar Freudenberger:

First, install this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

Now install the newly released 'standalone' version of Windows Update
Agent
3.0, v7.0.6000.374, for 32 bit machines (*not* Vista or any x64 version
of
Windows!):
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

The MS update team believes that this solves all three svchost problems
that
folks have been experiencing. See

Also see

(First try the steps posted May 4th at the beginning of the article.)

Workaround: Change the default from Microsoft Update to Windows Update:
Go
to Microsoft Update > Click on Change Settings in left pane > Scroll to
bottom of page > To Stop Using Microsoft Update > Disable Microsoft
Update
software and let me use Windows Update only (check). cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/901037

With Windows Update as your default, you will need to check in at Office
Update to keep your Office applications fully patched:
