Large text file (.txt, 3700 pages) very slow to load & edit.

Plain text (milling machine program) file is very large. It can take 3-5
minutes to open. In a simple text editor it is almost immediate. Is word
trying to format every page in the background? Is there some way to disable
all background functions?

Whenever you open a document in Word it converts to Word's internal format,
and formats the document to the page setup and printer driver to produce a
paged document. Inevitably with 3,700 pages there will be some lag involved.
You could work in normal view and turn off background repagination (tools >
options > general - there's a similar option in Word 2007), which will help
with editing, but not only delay the requirement for repagination. Are you
sure Word is the best tool for editing this document? Wouldn't a text
editor, such as UltraEdit suit the task better?
