LARGE LETTERS on monitor

I installed XP home on a laptop that had win98.
All looks good, except the fonts are really LARGE.
I tried the "file" and set it to small, but still to no
avail. Everything is LARGE TYPE. Any answers will be
appreciated.
The sys is set at 1024x768 pixels and color at 16Bit.
 
Right click blank area of Desktop then Properties then Appearance tab and
check Font size is Normal
 
Right click on desktop> properties> appearance tab>
advanced button> Advance Appearance Where it says "Item"
click it open and you can change the size of most things.
Go down the list change to each one.
