I use XP Pro w/sp2 and want to do a clean install of XP Pro w/sp2 to a new
250 Gig hard drive. My current drive is a Seagate - new drive is Western
Digital. How do I connect the ribbon and jumpers so I can boot to my old
drive and install XP Pro to the new drive. My goal is to have the old
Seagate as the E: and new WD as the C: drive. I do not want a dual boot
set-up. I suspect that one ribbon and jumpers arrangement will be to format
and install and another configuration for the final set-up. Which drive goes
to the end of the ribbon cable during each operation? Since I can't see the
labels on the drives, please be specific on jumper pins. Thanks!

The order on the ribbon doesn't matter. What you have to do is set the
jumper on your new drive to master and the jumper on your old drive slave.
You will find the jumpers next to where the ribbon plugs into the drive.
usually between the ribbon and the power plug. You will then have to install
windows XP SP2 onto the new drive.

You won't have your installed programs accessablef rom the old drive because
dlls and other files won't be registered with the new OS on the new drive.

But you data will still be there.

You should do a backup just in case something were to go wrong because there
is nothing wrong with having backups.
