large document handling

Can somebody advise me on where can I read on how Word handles large
documents, like a book? I am after merging chapters written as separate
documents, while preserving all bibliographic information (cross references),
equations and figures (with their numbers), etc.

I have to decide if I am to use LaTeX or Word for a major writing project.

Thank you,

Thank you Suzanne. I have been searching MS databases for word, large
documents and books but your excellent page did not show up. I should have
googled first.

Many contributors to our project will only use Word. In your personal
opinion, is the necessity of translating from Word to LaTeX worth gaining the
ability to control just about anything that LaTeX gives? My experience with
MS applications is that in many cases the application 'thinks' it 'knows'
better. That may be due to my limited knowledge, though.

The effort of translating to LaTeX is a fairly heavy addition to the
project. In many cases providing a good template is sufficient (or at least,
about as much as you can do anyway).

Acrobat is another option for combining individual documents into a
composite output.
