Laptop won't power save screen

Hi, using a Dell C640 with WinXP.
Don't use a screen saver, just set the monitor to power down after a few
minutes. Worked like a cherry for a long time.
Won't power-save anymore. Updated the driver for the Radeon 7500 thinking
that would do it, didn't. This is not a system standby issue, just trying to
get the screen to shut itself off after a while. No odd results when I set
the time, just doesn't take.
Running SP2, everything else honky-dory. For this moment anyway.

Does the cursor move on it's own when you have it just sitting there? The
last Dell lappy I had did and a Toshiba lappy that I have did. This was
cured by disabling the enhanced pointing precision options in the mouse
control panel applet.

Thanks, I'll look at the settings for the touchpad and make sure. Yes, in
fact the cursor does bop around sometimes, but I use the thing on my lap on a
couch and I've always thought that was from my breath on the touchpad. But
that didn't stop when I lowered the sensitivity, so I'll check it out.
Weirdest thing was the screen power off just picked up and started working
again after about the 6th reboot over the course of a few days.
