My laptop lost winsrv from Windows when I installed SP2.
I found the tech note from MS on that problem. (I am getting a Stop:
c0000135)

I put in my OS (xp pro) disk and tried to use the Recovery Console.
But it is asking for an Administrative Password. I know that I didn't set
up
a password for this laptop. I tried leaving it blank but that isn't the
right
answer.

I can't repair the OS without getting into console, can I?? I downloaded
the
fix from Microsoft (an .exe). I burned it to cd but I can't figure if it is
possible
to even load it from this situation. I tried a safe mode but can't get into
it
either (get same stop message).

What can I do? The laptop has critical info on it.

Thanks,
jenny

Dancer give this a try.

Item #21

Fix For Correct Password Not Accepted Bug
1. Install Recovery Console.
To do so, open a command box in Win XP:
(select Start | Run, then type cmd); then, at the command prompt,
type D:\i386\winnt32.exe/cmdcons (replace D: with the letter for your CD
drive).
The installation will proceed, after which you can choose the Recovery Console
from the Windows boot screen.

(The Bug)

There is a bug in WinXP which prevents you from using Recovery Console
even though the right password is typed when prompted....
So, here's the trick.
2. Enable Administrator to Log On Automatically in Recovery Console
3. Reboot into WinXP.
4. Select Start | Run, then type regedit Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Setup
\RecoveryConsole Change the SecurityLevel DWORD value data to 1.
5. Reboot the PC

Thanks very much for your suggestion but I can't get into windows to do any
of the attached suggestions.

The "missing winsrv" is not a Windows file. You are getting this error
and having this problem because your computer was infected with the
TVMedia spyware (and probably other malware) before you installed SP2.
Take the machine to a good local professional and have them 1) rescue
your data first; 2) fix the issue. It is fixable, but it would be
wisest to have them back up your data first.

Thanks Malke,
I found that info just now on internet. I have the .exe that fixes the
problem
but how to do that with the problem I have. It won't load in dos. I
ordered
an adapter cable to attach laptop harddrive to my desktop so I can pull all
of
the data out of it. (That doesn't take a pro :-). So I guess I have to
wait on
adapter cable. Once I can see the contents of the laptop hdd from my
desktop
then I can fix it. I was just hoping there was something I could do in the
interim.

I'm glad you figured it out. I always suggest a pro in these cases
because one doesn't know the poster's skill level. Since you are
obviously comfortable with creating a network, etc. of course you can
do this yourself. The alternative to waiting would be to use something
like a Bart's PE disk to get into the inoperative Windows. That
definitely requires some geekly skills and another computer.

Or a CDR drive, as I understand it. I was going to suggest BartPE also
but since I am not that familiar with it I didn't feel comfortable.

Congrats on the re-awarding of your MVP status, too!

Thanks, I tried Hiran's boot cd but had no luck with various programs on it.
I will try Bart's Pe
