although i have same username / PW on both machines, the latop can see
the desktop but am getting an not authorized error dialog; however, the
desktop can't see the laptop unless i do a search for computer and only
then am i able to view the files on the laptop; this just happened
recently; (i don't recall having this problem on my old dell which had
xphe)

however, the laptop can see the old dell (xphe) shared files and
folders (and vice-versa) and the new machine (xpmce) can see the old
dell (xphe) shared files and folders (and vice versa)

this just recently happend (i don't recall making any changes on
xpmce).

Make sure to have the same account / password defined on both
machines, then use this account when logging on.

Have you tried mapping to either a host name, or IP addy? Do you have
matching workgroup names? Have you tried installing the IPX/SPX protocol on
both machines for host name mapping? Have you tried harsh language...?
