This definitely sounds like a hardware problem. There are other reasons it
could be turning off other than heat, although overheating is the first
culprit. Contact Toshiba tech support.

Does it crash or does it perform an orderly shutdown?

over heating is a most common cause for sudden shut down.

might make an attempt to blow the cob webs out of the innards.

if you do not have a program to monitor temps and fans, it might be a good time to acquire one.
I recommend speed fan unless there is one from your manufacturer's web site.

It crashes, all is off instantly

From your descriptions, including later posts, this isn't an XP problem, but
hardware failure. These can be very difficult to debug, harder to fix,
and in the end, you are probably looking at replacing the system if you need
reliability.

You could try removing and reseating parts that can be removed and reseated,
such as memory and hard disks and batteries; also be sure the vents are
clean. You can try using the laptop on a cooling pad.

Is there a tutorial to speedfan? How do I make it log data? it logs
only the time.

This could be caused by a hardware or by a software problem. To explore the
hardware issues, follow the suggestions provided by the other respondents.
To explore the software issues, do this:
- Log on as Administrator (in Safe Mode if it's WinXP Home)
- Click Start / Run / msconfig{OK}
- Click the Hardware tab
- Untick every task except for the virus scanner/firewall
- Click the Services tab
- Hide all Microsoft services
- Untick every remaining service except for the virus scanner/firewall
- Reboot the machine

You are now running the machine with a minimal set of tasks and services.
Some applications may no longer work properly. If they are essential for
your work during the trouble-shooting phase, restore the respective tick
marks.

If your machine runs stable for two weeks then you need to identify the
problem task/service by process of elimination. If it still crashes then you
probably have a hardware problem.

might go to his web site and look.

There is no HW tab in MSCONFIG, did you mean startup?

I am not sure it is related
When I use msconfig as suggested I get this error
an access denied error was returned while attempting to change a
service
I got it before when trying to remove entries to prevent startup
I do not which entry it refers to as I am able to remove and re enter
entries
I am logged as admin I even created a new account as admin and logged
in using password
I hope it is related issue

Sorry, my mind was elsewhere. I meant the "Startup" tab - there is, of
course, no "Hardware" tab.

To find out which service throws up an error, untick one at a time and click
OK until you find the culprit. Which one is it?

I think it is one already unticked so I have no way of knowing, I
think if I recall it was related to itune but I am not sure, no way of
knowing now

Meanwhile I monitor the heat with fanspeed, it jumped now from 31c to
72C so maybe it is heat, but I will keep on monitoring
