laptop screen brightness with XP upgrade

P

Peter Serratore

Hi all--

I upgraded my Sony Viao laptop (formerly running Windows
ME) to XP, and the screen brightness and contrast
controls (and probably other function-key-related
controls) don't work anymore.

I need to be able to adjust screen brightness to cut
power consumption while on a long flight.

Thanks,

Visit the Sony support website and search for the Windows XP
compatible video adapter drivers for your specific Sony computer.
Also, you should install any other Windows XP drivers Sony
offers for your specific Sony notebook model.

Afterward, use ClearType to fine-tune your LCD screen:

Hello--

Thanks for the reply.

I went to the Sony website and found a "Notebook Utility"
download for XP. I downloaded and installed it, and
rebooted.
I don't see any discernable changes in the areas that I'm
concerned with: the power meter settings and controls are
unchanged, and screen still doesn't respond to the
function key controls for brightness or contrast.
So maybe the set-up utility isn't what I was looking for,
and I see no other download that might do the job.

Any ideas? Maybe I should drill into the case and install
a potentiameter!

Hi--

Thanks for the reply.

Isn't utility software part of the OS? I had no idea it
was a separate component.
If not, will it work with XP, since the original OS for
this laptop was ME?
Interestingly, though, the speaker volume control is
working (it's an on-screen one), and always has.

It's a separate component for notebook PCs.... search for Power Utilities.

On the other hand, volume control IS part of the operating system!

Hi,

There is usually some sort of utility that is installed by the OEM for these
sort of controls. In my case i have a dell laptop and the FN controls (for
screen brightness and volume) and visual displays works only after i have
installed the utility. There may be a similar utility on one of the CDs that
you had received with your laptop. Even though it might have been meant for
Windows ME, you may try to install it in XP as well.
