Everytime I try to boot my Compaq laptop, I get the
following message "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
\windows\system32\drivers\*.*" (the message repeats all
down the screen with a bunch of file names). The machine
was working fine until the other day. Is there a
solution? Thanks for any assistance.

Try pressing the <delete key> at bootup and look for the Compaq diagnostic
program. There should be a list of options.
If the <delete> key doesn't work, consult your latop user manual.

If you have an XP CD, you could enter BIOS, set it to boot from CD,
pop in the CD and start XP setup. From there you could try a repair
install and see if it works.

I wish you luck though. My Compaq notebook only came with Restore CDs
that would restore it back to factory conditions. I don't want that;
as soon as I got it home I repartioned it and installed XP Pro. I
didn't want XP home and all the stuff that Comcrap, excuse me, Compaq,
decided I needed.
