1. All three desktops show up on the list of net machines (all running XP
Home Edition) but the laptop won't, whether I connect it by wire or by
wireless.

2. I can send files from the laptop to the others, but I can't share them
from there. When I try, I get the message the "server" is not running.

Help!

I posted this question to the wrong forum before. Sorry.

Does the message say that the "server service" is not running or not
started? If so, please see Methods 1 and 2 in this Microsoft
Knowledge Base article for possible solutions:

You receive a "The server service is not started" error message when
you try to add a user to a group in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885859/en-us

If not, what is the complete and exact text of the message?

You're welcome! One thing that the article didn't mention: run
"services.msc" again and make sure that "Startup type" is set to
"Automatic", so that the service will start when you reboot.
