Laptop/mobile connectivity

I've got an Acer TravelMate 244XC laptop with a built-in 56K modem. I am going travelling round France and want to connect to the internet using a mobile and data connectivity cable.
Do I need a mobile with a built-in modem or simply a mobile with GPRS? I had a Nokia 3100 as someone at a mobile shop told me that was what I needed but having downloaded Nokia's PC Suite and seen the ReadMe.txt which said that the 3100 was not supported and did not have a modem, I returned it - was I premature?
