laptop HD help please

T

Terry

Sorry about cross-post (comp.ibm.pc.hardware), very quiet.

Win xp

I have a spare 20gig IDE laptop HD from a working XP laptop.

I wish to prepare it for use in a USB enclosure, then simply use for
storing/transfering data via USB 2.0.

When I place this drive in my 2.5 inch enclosure it is not recognised when
plugged into my XP desktop?

I have a similar drive (ex ebay), which works fine in the same
enclosure...with no OS installed.

TIA
Terry

Just a thought, but can the enclosure handle the drive's
file format? Some of them seem to only work with FAT
32 formatted drives.

Thanks Ken

I am unsure how the HD that works ok in the enclosure is formatted, as it
was like that from ebay.
I just got the enclosure & usb cable, put that 2.5" drive into it, plugged
into desktop pc and works as another drive with no OS showing
anywhere!.......... I use it just for storing files from my PC's.
I suspect the "other" spare drive may have to be formatted etc.(having XP on
it from my laptop).

With the XP drive in the enclosure, and plugged in, what you see in
"Disk Management?"

Next time you plug it in; select it in "My Computer" then
right click on it and click on "Properties". It should show
"File system:" with NTFS or FAT32 listed.

Terry

If you are running a non NTFS operating system on a
system (Win95 98 w/o SP2) then the drive needs to be
formatted as FAT32 to be readable in all your systems.

If all your systems can use NTFS then you should use
that, as it lets you use larger files.

The "OK" drive shows as FAT32 via System Info route.(not shown on My
computer route).
The "spare" drive does not show up anywhere, but when in the enclosure the
single light(red) is ON.
If I put this "spare" drive back into laptop it works ok with Win Xpstartup
etc.

Check your jumper settings to make sure they match up with what the
enclosure is expecting.

Does the drive have master/slave/cable_select jumper pins ? There may be
a block of four pins, separate from the 44 pin IDE section. Some USB
adapter chips, like the connected drive to be "master". That may be
mentioned in the assembly instructions that come with the enclosure.

How do I check jumper settings & where please...I see no facility for
settings on these drives. They have no pins covered.

There are the 4 seperate pins Paul, but no covers on any.
No instructions with enclose but I will surf to try and find any.

Re; jumper settings. Check for an illustration on the back/top of hard
drive casing. It should show the jumper pins with a 4-pin image of a
power socket (to give jumper position relative to power socket)
Usually there are letters ie: CS (cable select) MS (master) S (slave)
As an external hdd yours would be CS. You COULD repost with jumper pin
details/lettering.

Jumper/pin settings are same on both HD (both Travelstar 20gig).
When HD's are mounted in the enclosure, the USB adaptor plugs into the HD
and is NOT connected to the seperated 4 pins.
A jumper diagram on these HD's illustrates as follows:
A) Device0(master)= pin1
B) Device1(slave)=end 2 verticle pins(of the 4 sep' pins), like this :
C) Cable select=end 2 horizontal pins (of the 4 sep' pins), like this ..
But as mentioned above ..nothing connected to the end 4 pins.

I have since put the "spare" drive back in the laptop and
partitioned/formatted, but no OS installed, but it has made no
difference...when placed in the enclosure it lights up but not detected on
the PC, yet the other HD does.

HTH

You can often look up jumper settings for a particular drive on the
intertubes--What's the manufacturer and model of the drive?

Ok, that's hard to interpret. There are a lot of Hitachi Travelstar
models, but it looks like their jumper scheme is fairly consistent. For
instance:

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/5k100/5k100jum.htm

Now you have to find out what your drive enclosure requires. If it
wants either slave or cable select, you'll have to scare up a jumper
somewhere so that you can properly configure your drive.

You description of the problem still makes me think it's a jumper
setting problem.

Thanks for diagram for pins.....sorry but I have no idea "what the enclosure
wants"

How do I check jumper settings & where please...I see no facility for
settings on these drives. They have no pins covered.

The jumper settings are usually on the label. Usually
Master is no jumpers, slave is a jumper across two pins and
cable select is one of the two pins and a different other
pin. To use it in the enclosure it is usually jumpered as
master so without any jumper odds are it should work.

Without any jumper is also how it would have been installed
in the laptop, IOW normally there isn't a jumper setting
that needs changed.

Have you checked to see if this drive is detected in Disk
Management?

Terry

No jumper is usually Master (already).

"what the enclosure wants"

Your enclosure expects the enclosed drive to be jumpered in a particular
way--most likely "Master," but check out the product manual to be sure.
