Laptop freezing on trying to bootup Windows XP

I have a toshiba satellite 1005-S157 laptop with windows XP on it. I had put
it in hibernate mode for a while and then just when i tried starting up
again, before I could plug in the power cord, it shut down abruptly. My
laptop battery has been pretty much useless for a long time, but not this bad
! And after that, I just haven't been able to reboot the machine. The laptop
seems to hangup in the middle of the bootup process at all different points.
A couple of times (out of about 50 or so times that i have tried rebooting)
it did seem to boot up fine, but just after it was done, it shut down by
itself. I haven't been able to start up in the safe mode either, it just
hangs somewhere. It seems that after each attempt, the longer I wait before
trying to reboot, the system goes further in the boot sequence before hanging
up (just an observation). Any help in restoring it to normal working
condition will be appreciated greatly. Thanks.

Hi,

It's probably a hardware problem, unfortunately. You can try correcting the
system file set by booting with the WinXP CD and running the Recovery
Console (if it will stay on long enough), the nrun "chkdsk C: /r" from the
prompt.

But I'm betting that it is a hardware issue that will need to be addressed
in a shop. I'd still also do a memory test first, just in case it is a bad
stick. If you want to check the memory, there are free programs here:
