Like most new computer buyers I did not receive any disks when I purchased by
machine
from Comp USA.

After trying to install the Avid video edit program, my Pavilion laptop
will not boot. I get the message: "the procedure entry point_resetstkoflw
could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll .... and the
machine stops loading in all modes, including safe mode.

Can I use an emergency startup disk made in my other Windows machine (also
XP) to repair the laptop's operating system? Or what other alternatives do I
have? I have tried to boot from Windows XPL install disk, but the machine
will not recognize it.

Help please?

it's likely you have a hidden partition with
those vital restore files. But they
may restore the machine back to the
original configuration. It works like
something with pressing maybe an
f10 key as soon right after the cmos
status screen. But your can be different.

you could go to the manufacturer's
website and look for the FAQ's, downloads,
patches and other information particular to
your machine. Also, you "really", i mean "REALLY"
need to get disks that will access your system
externally. Double check with the mfg to see
if they should have been included in your purchase
of "their high quality product".

FYI: a tech for my laptop at the manufacturer told
me that i could initiate the win32nt.exe file in
the \i386 folder and there was a repair
windows option following the install setup process.
But i didn't want to risk
my programs, if it didn't work out.

Thanks for the reply Ben. Trouble is, I can't get to a command prompt,
into Dos or anywhere. f10 takes me to setup where I have set it to boot from
the CD drive. I
put in the XP install disk but after about 10 seconds of the drive light
blinking, the machine reverts to
the hard drive to try to boot... which it will not. It also will not boot
in safe mode or command mode.
The only thing I can think of doing is trying to boot off an external USB
drive, if the machine will
read that as "the network".

I find XP very difficult to debug. There apparently is no such thing as an
emergency boot disk, no way to get into the hard drive that I can find other
than to rip it out of the machine and put in a new drive.

If you have any other ideas I would appreciate hearing from you again.

ok,
an emergency boot disk can be make off another
pc with the same o.s. and is functional.

on the other pc, format a blank cd and
select the emergency boot option.

before you eject/burn the cd copy
over on to it fixboot and fixmbr and
be sure that ntdetect.com and ntdlr
are on it. Then burn/eject and use
it to boot the laptop.

with it and if there are no hardware issues,
you can boot to the c drive on your laptop.
once there, take a look for the 4 files mentioned
in the root. copy them over if necessary.
also, you can run the "fix" commands as well.

then see if you can boot without the cd.
if so, you'll be in an ok situation.
if not, then...... we'll wait and see...

btw: did you get the facts from the
mfg website yet? If your f10 key
got you to a booting opportunity, i
think it is likely that the mfg provided
those booting disks....

After much experimentation I have found that the f11 key takes me to a
recovery mode.. which takes me to a partition on the disk. Recovery is ...
28 minutes away, now 27 minutes away.

By the way, I found my model laptop on the HP website. I can "order" the
repair disks for a fee but they are not provided. There is also a warning
that says I cannot start my machine with disks made on any other machine,
surprise surprise.

Thanks for your help.
