Laptop Battery level indicator

I am using a 2 year old laptop that originally came with
Windows ME. In Windows ME I had a battery indicator
showing in the task manager. It let me know how much
battery power I had left.
I've recently installed Windows XP Pro and have set the
Power Scheme to Laptop and checked "Always show icon in
taskbar".
The problem is that the icon shows a power cord and
moving the cursor over it states "On AC Power", which
would be fine if I was plugged into the wall, but I'm
using the battery. It doesn't seem to matter if I switch
between batter and electrical, I just get the same
taskbar icon and info.
How do I get the Battery Level Indicator to show up like
it did in Windows ME?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Visit the support website of the manufacturer of your laptop computer.
Search for the latest Windows XP compatible utility drivers.
Download and install it in accordance with the installation instructions.
