Laptop backlight settings?

I just bought a new laptop... nice... but when it's
unplugged, the backlight (that's what it's called, right?)
goes WAY down, obviously to save power. Sometimes that's
fine, but when it's a dark room, it's not enough light to
see clearly.

I can't find any backlight settings anywhere, are there
any, and where?

There will be a setting in the bios to control the brightness of the display
when on battery power.

Read your manual or go to the makers web site, they will
have a forum. XP has no settings for that
