I have a dell inspiron lap-top running xp media edition.

There is a one inch border on the left and right hand side of the screen.

I am unable to fit the windows GUI to the full screen...I looked in
display/settings but couldnt find anything to sort the prob.

It may have occurred when I re-seated the battery.

Thanks in advance

Make sure that the screen resolution matches the native resolution
according to the laptop's manual. If this doesn't help, install an
update for your video driver. Make sure to obtain that update from
the laptop's manufacturer site rather than from the manufacturer of
the on-board graphics chip.

You can also try this before upgrading your Video Drivers.

1. Right-click on Desktop and choose Properties.
2. Click Settings tab and then click Advanced button.
3. Click Adapter tab.
4. Click List All Modes button.

Suppose, your current resolution is 800x600 with 32 bit color. Here you can
choose the same Resolution with different Refresh Rate. E.g. 800x600, True
Color (32 bit), 60 Hertz or 800x600, True Color (32 bit), 75 Hertz. While
doing this if your screen goes blank then hit nothing it will revert back
after 15 seconds.

Hope this help, let us know!

Thank you so much!!!! I just bought this Dell laptop, my first, with windows
XP. I closed the top without shutting it off and then reopened it a little
while later - wouldn't you know it the screen was smaller. I have been
literally researching since about 7:45 p.m. Wisconsin time to figure this
out. Needle in a hay stack with help question. Your suggestion worked Thank
Goodness!

You must post your thread seprately. Anyhow, you have a provided a little bit
information about your error. Try this:

1. Turn on your PC.
2. Start Pressing F8 key rapidly with 1 sec. gap.
3. THis is will bring up the Windows Boot Menu.
4. Press Enter on Safe Mode.
5. See, if your Windows can boot into Safe Mode properly.
6. If so, then it could be possible that a newly installed Software or
Hardware is causing Windows not to boot in Normal mode or someone has changed
the Display Resolution to higher one which your monitor is not supporting.

If you can think that the problem could be because of Display Resolution
then try uninstalling your Display Drivers. Otherwise, uninstall any newly
installed program if you are sure.

Last but not least, if you are not sure about anything then try System
Restore.

Hope this help, let us know!
