Purchased a lap-top were I now live in Spain, Windows XP
pre-installed.

Tried to change the language to english but have had
little joy. Get the 'EN' symbol on task bar but all
menus, warnings etc. in Spanish. Is it possible to change
language so entire software in english?

One cannot "change" from one language version of Windows to
another language version. You'll need to purchase a "full version"
of Windows XP English and then perform a "clean install".
