LAN setup problems

I have two desktop computers (both running XP Home version, both should be up to date with latest patches) at home and I'm trying to set up a small network with just these two computers. I have put in network cards, attatched a 5 port router, run the network wizard, and still the two don't see each other. I've given them unique IP addresses to see if that would help (192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2), made sure that the workgroup name was the same on both, had the router and the cables (both new) checked by swapping them on a known working network, and still nothing. I've doublechecked to make sure file sharing is enabled on both computers. Both computers state that the network card is enabled and functioning properly. I've gone through the XP Networking checklist to make sure all steps have been done properly. I've doublechecked to make sure that there is no Network Bridge between the LAN card and the modem. Still, each computer only sees itself in the workgroup. I'm stumped. What can I do to get these two talking?

This is just a thought but if you have a third party
firewall installed on one or both computers, that could
be interfering with their communication. Try
disconnecting from the internet, disabling the firewalls
(if you have one) and see if they can see each other that
