Hi all, I posted a request some weeks ago for help with security related to
upgrading my gateway machine from Win2K to XP Home (clean install SP2).
Since upgrading, I have had ongoing problems with file/printer sharing.

Since then, I have made some progress with the problem and I would like to
know if anyone can offer further advice.

My problem now is that my two WIN2K machines can access the internet via the
gateway XP machine running ICS, but still cannot access any shared
resources. They get a username/password screen any user ID entered is
rejected by the XP machine - including the administrator ID/PW which is
common to all three. The XP machine can see the WIN2K machine resources, but
cannot access user ID records from those machine for permissions purposes.

If anyone has any idea of where to go from here, I would be really grateful.

Thanks

I presume that you have got file and printer sharing enabled in the
firewall? I think that it is off by default in SP2

I tried that and it made no difference. I also tried using an ACLS tool to
manually set the security privileges of shared folders (as SP2 has
absolutely NO user privileges interface). I have abandoned XP firewall at
the moment and am running McAfee Personal Firewall as a trial to see if
there is any improvement. But I still get the username/password request (and
none work) when trying to even see a list of resources on the XP machine.

uhm very strange - do you have a problem with the SP2 firewall off and all
other firewalls uninstalled? ie is it a windows issue or a firewall
configuration issue? I usually try and get everything running first without
any firewalls, then add them later. Disconnect from the internet while you
do the trials.

can you map a drive between the machines and access that way?

Have you got the guest account enabled or try setting up another account on
each system that is common, ie in addtion to the admin one.

This site has some usefull ideas http://www.duxcw.com/faq/network/xpnet.htm

this site might have some advice http://www.windowsnetworking.com

Good luck - I've been there and know how frustrating it can be
