LAN over PPP

Hi

I'm looking for a programm to make a LAN connection via the internet.

I have a DSL flatrate and a friend of mine has ISDN with free internet at
the weekends and another one has DSL too: We meet once in a while to put our
puters together and play a few LAN games and have fun.
But carrying the computers around is a bit of a drag. All of us can use the
internet for free at the weekends (well, we pay for it, but we do not have
to pay more or less wether we use it at the weekend or not). So, if we have
a program we can put our IP adresses in and our computers would treat each
other as in a LAN we could play more easily and more often.
Maybe it can be done by windows itself?
Or do we need a program?
We are not full uber hackers, but put up a LAN seems easy to us.

Two of us use Windows 2000 and one has Windows 98.

Any ideas where to look/ask?

Thank you very much.

Gamer's Internet Tunnel (GIT)

"Gamer's Internet Tunnel (GIT) is a free utility to link LANs together
over the Internet for network gameplay.
It can also be used to bridge many configurations of IPX or IPv4 packets
and frames from once point to another. Formerlly known as the Gamer's IPX
tunnel, GIT now tunnels TCP and UDP ports as well, in order to work with
modern games."

I'm looking for a programm to make a LAN connection via the internet.

Basically what you're looking for is a VPN (a virtual private
network). A VPN is basically a way to allow client software on a
remote PC to access a network server as if it were local.

Which means you either need WIndows 2000 Server on at least one
machine (which has built-in VPN server capabilitiy)and Windows VPN
clients on the other (these are free from Microsoft for other Windows
versions), or you need to buy a $35-40 DSL/cable router that includes
VPN terminator (not pass-through) capability, so the box itself can
manage the VPN (pass-through requires a server on the local side of
the connection). You might also need to buy VPN client software with
a VPN-capable router, although some support the free WIndows clients.
There are also freeware Linux-based VPNs.

There are basically 2 kinds of VPNs - IPSEC-based and SSL-based. IPSEC
is IP Security, a protocol to secure IP connections. It requires a
client on each remote machine and the configuration of firewalls on
the target machine to allow the IPSEC protocol to pass through to the
VPN server on the target machine. SSL is Secure Sockets Layer. The
advantage of the latter is that it allows browser-based access to a
network since SSL is supported by most browsers - but I don't know how
they would work with games - might be fine.

VPNs can be tricky to setup and manage, too. For one thing they tend
to take over alll your Internet connections and tunnel them through
the VPN (for security reasons since the purpose of a VPN is to allow
secure remote access to a network - if any other Net connection is
allowed on such a machine, security can be breached). This can be
turned off on most clients, however.

Thanks for the help.
Gamer's Internet Tunnel - http://www.morpheussoftware.net/git/ - suggested
by Wayne D seems to be what I was looking for.
