In configuring my home business network on a Compaq PC with an ADSL internet
connect I get a Mini port MAC bridge and a 1394 on top of the ethernet card
itself.

Why does this happen and does it serve any purpose?

Is it not better to avoid this and how would one defeat the automatic bridge
creation when using the Wizard?

Thanks,

Speedy

If you're not using the 1394 (FireWire) port for networking,
right-click and delete the Network Bridge.

By default, the original and Service Pack 1 versions of Windows XP
automatically create a network bridge between all enabled network
connections when you run the Network Setup Wizard. Microsoft
apparently decided that wasn't a good thing, because the Service Pack
2 version doesn't automatically create a network bridge.

To prevent that behavior in original and SP1, select the Wizard option
"Let me choose the connections to my network" and un-check the 1394
connection in the "Select the connections to bridge" screen.
