Lan Chat in Windows XP

How can I chat in a home network? I have 2 PCs connected to each other witha
Lan cable. Do I need to download a software of I can do this with windows or
MSN messenger?

if both computers are on the internet, download the latest version of msn
messenger.. http://messenger.msn.com use that. voice and video do WELL
over a local lan connection. I use it at work.
