Is there a version of Knoppix that I can install rather than the live CD I
just tried, I am very impressed it picked up all my hardware including the
wireless mouse, I would like to install it onto the hard drive thanks.

Knoppix is capable of being installed to HD. I'm not sure what the
current method is, but Googling for "installing knoppix"
the first hit I found:
http://clusterknoppix.sw.be/knx-install.htm
suggested that the way to go about it is
knx-hdinstall

Thanks ! because there are no instructions on the Knoppix site I assumed it
wasn't designed to be installed and was a demo of something else, I will try
it on a spare computer

Understand that when installed to the hard drive, Knoppix essentially
becomes a basic Debian installation. Installed software will be minimal.

For a better first install experience, I would suggest SimplyMEPIS. The
latest stable version is v3.4-3, and can be downloaded here:

http://ftp.wustl.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mepis/

The CD is a combination Live CD (like Knoppix) and install CD. The
MEPISUserGuide.pdf (available at the download site linked above) is an
excellent illustrated tutorial for installing, configuring, and using
SimplyMEPIS.

Hope it works well for you. I'm pimping MEPIS every chance I get.

Haven't installed the alpha yet -- I'm running the pre-alpha
"experimental" that Warren put out a couple weeks ago. So far, it's
*very* impressive.

The live CD contains everything required to install Knoppix onto HD.
Boot from the liveCD and start a root shell then type/run knoppix-installer
at the prompt.

There used to be a good flash tutorial at www.irongeek.com, however it seems
to be unavailable at the moment so you can get it at;

http://rapidshare.de/files/17796771/knoppix_tut.swf.html

(I see you are using outlook express so I have taken pity and not posted to
a binaries group ;)

Its about 4 Mb so not much of a download. This shows all steps of
installation including partitioning, so is a good introduction.

One thing I did find was that while everything worked straight off from the
liveCD including my cable modem, this did not work from HD.
Solved it by editing the install script to install in "beginner mode". Its a
bit trial and error at first but worth the effort.

I would also recommend using the knoppix forums where they are very helpfull
at solving problems. Can get a bit technical though.

I guess we all have our favs :) I have been pimping Ubuntu, since it
has worked for me. Mepis could find it's way on my server when I get
time, but I am not sure when that will be. I ahve too many projects at
home as it is.

Dapper Drake (Ubuntu 6.04) looks like it will be good.
