Killing an operation

Is there a way to cancel an operation in XL?
I'm looking for something akin to a "CTRL-Break" in VBA.
I know how to kill the auto calculation, which I do if, for ex. I've
done a large lookup and then I want to sort.
But sometimes I'll forget and be faced with an inordinate delay while XL
goes through the hoops of recalculating.

Only via Task Manager accessed via Ctrl+Alt+Delete to close Excel.

I've found Escape will *sometimes* kill the automatic recalc. But it's not
consistent.
