killed searching in XP

I killed my XP search function. I was going after registry keys related to
some spyware, which showed up in a srchasst registry key. Cleverly, I
deleted the whole folder of keys, rather than just the single offending key.
Now when I try to do a search in XP I get an error message saying "A file
that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to
run setup."

I'm wondering if there's any way around doing a repair install. I tried
installing indexing service, but no good. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Matt

Did you try System Restore?
Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools ->
System Restore.
Select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and click Next.
On the calendar, pick a restore point that was created before you
deleted those registry keys.
Click Next and follow the instructions.
Once your machine reboots see if you can run searches.

The downside of this approach is that any programs that were
installed or settings that were changed after the date you picked
will be deleted. Though System Restore does not delete any data
files that you created, it is not without some risk. That said,
it's a good idea to make sure you've backed up any files that you
can't afford to lose.

Hi Matty,

Try reinstalling the Search Companion files and see if that resolves the
problem:

Go to Start>Run and key in:
%systemroot%\inf
Click on OK or hit ENTER

Locate the Srchasst.inf file, right-click on it, then click on Install. You
may be asked to insert the XP install CD in order to complete the reinstall
of Search Companion, so ensure that you have it ready.

Sounds like a good opportunity to try "Ransack."

That did it exactly. Least invasive, and straight off the cd. I like that.
Thanks!

Do you still remember the name of the whole folder of keys? Maybe can copy
the whole folder of keys from a friend if it's similar...that's wat i usually
do...and see if it works... =)
