I wanted to scream so loud that all MS developers would
hear me in their sleep and never fall asleep again:

I was downloading a 500MB file in the background while
working in After Effects. The download completed and
while I was entering text in After Effects the download
dialog box pops up to tell that it is copying the file.
My keystrokes cancelled immediately the copying process
and the file was gone!!!!! The download box still told me
that the download was 100% finished and offered me as the
only option an ironically smiling cancel. Why the heck is
Explorer dowloading the file not to the target directory
immediately? (I had to free extra disc space on my c:
drive.) Why can't the dialog not stay in the background?
Why must the cancel button be activated?

Is there a way to surpress the copying file dialog box or
keep it in the background? Is there even a way to recover
the file? I checked and couldn't find anything. Even
Norten Protect was no help.

The file is temporarily stored in Temporary Internet Files until the
download is complete. It then is copied to the destination folder.
Normally, you don't see the "copying file" dialog. Instead of disappearing
so fast that you do not see it, it showed up due to the size of the
download.

If the file server supports resume, restarting the download would use
whatever it find in Temporary Internet Files and pick up from there. Since
the download was complete and not transferred, that might happen regardless
of server support. Only way to find out is to try.

You can move the location of your browser cache to another partition if
you'd like. Do so using Internet Options> General> Temporary Internet
Files> Settings> Move Folder. I have mine moved over to a partition that is
used as a catchall for various temp operations.

I don't know of any way to force the dialog to the background. I do move
the window off to the side so that I can keep an eye on its progress. If I
happen to see that it is nearing completion, I'll take a break from
whatever I'm doing until that operation completes.

Hi Sharon,

thanks for the information. I assuemd to find the file in
the Temporary Internet Files folder, but it wasn't there!
I had the same experience before, but the file was not as
big. It seems that windows deletes the source file when
the copying process is cancelled. I don't know if that
Windows 98 bug is still in XP. When a file was moved in
98 and the move failed because of a I/O error the source
file was gone.

Don't be so sure it's not there. Log on with another account and look in your TIF folder for it. It won't have the exact name. Also it may not be considered complete so it won't appear normally, TIF has more files than what you can normally see. Also check history as that may find it (under your login).
