How can one use the "keywords" and "category" fields
under the Summary tab of Properties (for an image file)
to retrieve/cross-reference files? These seem like
fields with useful functions, but I haven't found any
information about how to use them.

They will be found in a search.

Go to...Search / All Files and Folders /
A word or phrase in the file.

Thank you for your response. I tried your suggestion
immediately, using a keyword. The search retrieved
several MS Word documents, but no image files. No images
were retrieved when I searched using the "Pictures,
music, or video" option, either. I have files saved
under *.psd, *.png, *.tif, *.jpg, and Fuji's proprietary
RAW format. I don't suppose the RAW format would be
recognized, but some of the others should be, shouldn't
they?

I'm going to try a second keyword search, making sure at
least one file in each format is keyed. I'll get back to
you.

.I attempted to add a keyword to a file in each format.
The program would not allow the entry of a keyword in the
*.psd or *.png formats, even though a box for entry
appeared on screen. The program allowed the entry of a
keyword for a *.tif file, but would not save it, claiming
the file was in use by another application or was read-
only (neither was true). Only the *.jpg and *.raf files
could accept and save keywords. Of those two, only the
*.jpg file was retrieved using the search, using first
the "files and folders" option, then again using
the "photos" option.

Is there an archiving application that would work
seamlessly with Windows XP? I have tried Adobe's
Photoshop Album 2.0. Many of its functions are redundant
with Photoshop editing programs, and its organising
capabilities are seriously limited. To maintain free
space on the hard drive, all I really need is something
with archiving capabilities, something that allows the
use of keyword and categories for retrieval of files.
Have I missed something that Microsoft produces?

Most folks have .jpg files, you did not specify
in your original message. I just tried a search
on several formats and was able to retrieve
results on...jpg, .mix, .tga, and .pcx.

I find the most image files by going to...

Search / All Files and Folders / A word or
phrase in the file.

True, you may find some documents but
then again it's merely a search, not an
image archiving program.

If you wish to archive your images on CDs
you might like Microsoft Digital Image
Suite 9. It includes a separate program
that links to Digital Image Pro 9 called
Digital Image Library 9.

Microsoft offers a 30 day return guarantee
so you may want to give the program a try.

.Thank you for your assistance. There are so many
applications available and relatively little guidance on
how to choose between them. I appreciate your help.
