I have notes and information associated with different note and
organizer software and I want software so that I can keep everything in
one place and easily find my notes, urls, msc lists and thoughts. I
only have 256k so I also need a program that is low usage.

What program is the best for this?

Thanks

Treepad would be best, IMO. I have been using it for years and have a
huge amount of info stored, but the file is only 75k. The program is
easy to use and trouble-free.

===== " TreePad " is great, I have used it for years ...... But it's
just plain text (no formatting or pictures ) ........ if you need
formatting and pictures then get " KeyNote " ==========

I go with Treepad Lite too.

The real thing is it stores ideas, snippets of info, etc.

It's got a nice search, it doesn't print well, but that's what cutnpast is
for.

If you need more you'll need Keynote, but IMO, once they start adding bits
they don't know when to stop - rich text, graphics alarm, clocks and lord
knows what else.

This might be a good way to start. The ACF Treepad file contains all the information that's shown on
the ACF program information pages. If you haven't downloaded the ACF file I suggest you grab a copy
and check it out. Keynote imports Treepad files so you try both apps and see which suits you best.

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ftp/acf_List_2005-08-17.hjt (878 KB)

If your information is stored in text files I suggest you import it this way: Create a node with the
same name as the app and import all the files that relate to it as subnodes. I normally search just
the nodes for the name (or part of the name) of an app - then click on the result I'm looking for
and Treepad takes me right to the info - very quick and easy.

more ways to find things easily. . .

If I want to "flag" an app for further attention I create a subnode named "revise" or "revise PL"
etc. - when I'm ready to make the changes I search for those nodes. When I download programs I note
the download info in Treepad - I can find the app that a file belongs to by searching Treepad for
the file name. If I want to find all the apps by one author I search for the author's name or the
site URL. . .

I concur with Treepad. Keynote is a good program too but I get nervous with
anything other than plain text files because of the possibility of file
corruption, or a file format that is suddenly no longer supported. Then
you're stuck transferring possibly huge amounts of data from an obsolete
format to a new one. At least with text only format, it's never going to get
left behind.

A couple of work arounds:
You can use some sort of text "formatting" to highlight key words or titles
in your text. Get creative with symbols. You can even create permanent
bookmarks by creative use of alphanumerics and symbols.

But suppose you want to include a picture with your text, you ask?

Treepad can be nicely combined with Irfanview for this task. Rename the
extension of your image to something not used by any of your other graphics
programs, then associate this extension with Irfanview. (In Irfanview's
options, you'll have to turn off the option that prompts the user to re-name
files with incorrect extensions. Otherwise, everytime IV opens the file it
will prompt you to rename the file.)

Now, in Treepad, whenever you want to include an image with your text,
insert a hyperlink to the renamed image file. When you click on it in
Treepad, up pops IV with your image. Nice alternative to HTML. . .

Thanks,

I've been using keynote but everything else is in text. Everyone seems
to like treepad and your suggestions for organizing existing files are
very helpful.

You're welcome Dansheen. :)

I think I've *finally* figured keyword searches - a special "Keyword" node with a list of the
keyword searches (same method as the ACF wiki). I need that to remind what the keywords are - I've
added keywords in the past but had trouble remembering them. Now I can look at the Keyword reminder
list and know that I should search for "Keywords: block select" or whatever - I think this method is
going to work. . .
