Keyboards with new homebuilt pc

I notice that the vast majority of keyboards now come with programmable keys.
I am just wondering, in terms of PC building and getting up and running, when
you attach the keyboard and turn the new homebuilt PC on for the first
time...do the regular keyboard and function keys needed to access the BIOS etc
work without loading the keyboard software...especially since there is no OS
yet.

I was looking at the MS Multimedia keyboard or perhaps a Logitech. Seems like
a simple question but just wanted to make sure F6 etc would work without
software.

Logitech cordless freedom works just fine as a USB keyboard in bios...the older boards had to have legacy USB enabled and if you
were lucky it worked......there was a USB setup that did not work(Microsoft I think) but there was a company(uk) that came up with a
dongle that allowed that one and older boards to use USB/cordless KB's

yes, all keyboard normal functions will work fine for BIOS/dos functions.

the programmable keys may require software however to work.
my MS internet keyboard doesnt need drivers for the pre-defined programmable
keys to work, it only needs the drivers/software to actually program the
keys from the pre-defined.
